Left Turn Visuals

Channeled feelings into drawings during a particularly gnarly time. They resonated with folks and inspired holiday cards.

  • Life has taken a lot of left turns for me and my friends lately. On the surface, the left turns are things like divorce, death, infertility, polyamory.

But it’s really about the stuff underneath, like:

Identity. Who am I without this?

Belonging. Will my community accept me if I choose this?

    Un-learning. I’m not a failure if I don’t hit this milestone.

Ambiguity. How do I know if I’m making the right choice?

  • How many people have used both/and as a community agreement? <Waits for everyone to raise their hand>

Lately my friends and I are using both/and All The Time to talk about life’s left turns. About a divorce, for example:

I didn’t wish for this and it could be the best thing I never asked for.

I want closure and I know I won’t get it from [person’s name].

    Congratulations and I’m sorry.

  • I know my friends and I aren’t the only ones going through this.

So to anyone else who’s letting go of one future and building another:

What would you add to the underneath part of the iceberg?

What would you add to the both/ands?

What other metaphors resonate? I really want to know!

In case you need to hear it today: I see you.

Reflect on personal stuff using visuals, doodling, and shapes

  • This booklet walks you through the steps in the guided reflective activity.

  • Printing directions: Print double sided and flip on the long edge.

  • Folding directions: Fold along the dotted line that says “fold here first." Then fold along the dotted line that says “fold here second". Pages are numbered.
